Arizona Azurite Malachite XL 4.5 inch Stone Sphere Rock

This hand cut sphere is extra large at 4.5 inches in diameter. It is deep royal blue Azurite splatters, black Tenorite and green Malachite in a gray/tan matrix. One side is colorful - the other is mostly matrix.

Material came from the Morenci Copper Mine in Arizona. Arizona is the leading copper producing state.

Azurite is a very popular mineral because of its unparalleled color, a deep blue called "azure", hence its name. Azure is derived from the arabic word for blue. The color is due to the presence of copper (a strong coloring agent). Azurite has been used as a dye for paints and fabrics for eons. Azurite is often mixed with its colorful close cousin, Malachite. They are both copper carbonates.
