African Green Malachite Handcrafted Stone Jewelry Box

Lovely! A handcrafted Malachite stone box! The material came from the Katanga Mine area in the Congo, Africa.

Malachite is a copper carbonate. It has a hardness between 3.5 and 4. It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system, and most often forms botryoidal, fibrous, or stalagmitic masses. This material is found in the oxidation zone of major copper deposits.

This stone's name is from the Greek, malache, - "mallow" in reference to its green leaf color.

This small superbly crafted rectangle box is about 2.5 inches long by 2 inches wide by less than 1.25 inches high. The walls are about .25 inch thick. It weighs about .5  lb.     #2
