Sphalerite and Chalcopyrite Mineral Specimen Rock

Sphalerite Mineral Specimen from the TriState area. Sphalerite, also known as Blende or Zinc Blende, is the major ore of Zinc. When pure (with little or no Iron) it forms clear crystals, usually red (known as Ruby Blende), but as Iron content increases it forms dark, opaque metallic crystals (known as Marmatite).

Chalcopyrite (or copper pyrite), looks like, and is easily confused with Pyrite. Chalcopyrite is one of the minerals refered to as "Fool's Gold" because of its bright golden color.

This piece is 3 inches long by 1.5 inches wide, and stands 1 inch high.
