Chatoyant Malachite Fibrous Africa Mineral Specimen This lacey green Malachite specimen was found in the Katanga Mine in Zaire, Africa. Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral. It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system, and most often forms botryoidal, fibrous, or stalagmitic masses. Chatoyancy is when light is reflected within the mineral. It is an effect usually caused by a fibrous growth. Malachite was known in Ancient Egypt as early as 3000 B.C. It was used for ornament and in powder form for make up and paint pigment. In the Middle ages, Malachite was worn to protect from black magic and sorcery. In Ancient Greece amulets for children were made of Malachite. This piece is two toned dark and light, and very velvety looking! It is 4.5 inches long, and is almost 1.5 inches at its widest. It is about 1 inch thick.
