Natural Fossil Lake Fish Fossil

A Knightia Eocaena fossil fish from Fossil Lake, Wyoming, approximately 50 million years old, from the Eocine period. Since its discovery in the 1870s, Fossil Lake has produced more than a million perfectly preserved fossil fish in Limestone bases, as well as insects, amphibians, alligators, turles, birds, mammals (including a horse!), snakes, and plants.

The term fossil refers to any preserved remains or imprint of a living organism (usually ancient), such as a bone, shell, footprint, or leaf impression.

The Knightia Eocaena is the most common fish in Fossil Lake and is Wyoming's state fossil.
