Brazilian Agate Drusy 2.25 inch Stone Sphere Rock

This hand-cut sphere is 2.25 inches in diameter and is cut from Brazilian Agate. It is a beautiful layer of colors and has a natural vug (open pocket) of Drusy crystals (tiny Quartz crystals). The crystals are gray and sparkly.

Many agates are hollow, since deposition has not proceeded far enough to fill the cavity, and in such cases the last deposit commonly consists of quartz crystals directed towards the free space so as to form a crystal-lined cavity, or geode. Often the Drusy will be the color of the mineral underneath.

Agate was highly valued as a talisman or amulet in ancient times. It was said to quench thirst and protect against fever. Persian magicians used agate to divert storms. Mithridates, king of Pontus, had a collection of thousands of agate bowls. Agate bowls were also popular in the Byzantine Empire. Collecting agate bowls became common among European royalty during the Renaissance and many museums in Europe, including the Louvre, have spectacular examples.
