Morrisonite Jasper Bargain Cabochon Stone Gemstone This lovely cabochon is Morrisonite Jasper from Oregon. This material comes from the famous Morrisonite Jasper Mine located above the Owhyee Mountains of SE Oregon near the Idaho border. Morrisonite Jasper generally offers a variety of orbs of pastel colors of creams, greens, and blues. It is named for James Morrison, who for a half century lived in a canyon of the Owyhee river. During those years Mr. Morrison explored much of that rugged area known locally as the Owyhee breaks. The Greek origin of the word jasper, iaspis, means "spotted stone." This form of semiprecious chalcedony, or microcrystalline quartz, is usually red, brown or green. Its patterns are much less regular and defined than those of the other chalcedony variety, agate. Another difference between the two is that jaspers are generally opaque, while agates tend to be translucent (or at least contain translucent bands). This lovely cabochon is custom cut into a triangle 26 mm long, by 12 mm and 4 mm thick. E-mail a friend about this item. | |||||||||||||||
