Biggs Picture Jasper Stone Slab Rough Rock for Cabbing

A great slice of Biggs Jasper, a beautiful, famous scenery stone that comes from Oregon.

Biggs Jasper is a silicated volcanic ash. This jasper was formed by a volcanic ash flow, overlying the basalt formation. It is from the Miocene Age.

Biggs jasper was discovered while constructing Interstate 84 through Sherman County. Near Biggs, Oregon. The find is now covered by the freeway and this material is now scarce.

The Greek origin of the word jasper, iaspis, means "spotted stone." This form of chalcedony, or microcrystalline quartz, is usually red, brown or green. Its patterns are much less regular and defined than those of the other chalcedony variety, agate. Another difference between the two is that jaspers are generally opaque, while agates tend to be translucent (or at least contain translucent bands).

Shown wet on the first side. Piece is 4.75 inches long by 1.5 to 2 inches wide and 4 mm thick. It weighs .16 lb. #3
