Gemstone Animal Figurines

A small statue, usually small enough to be picked up, is called a figurine. There are many figurines of animals from many different materials. We specialize in figurines carved from rare and unique natural gemstone materials. Each gemstone animal figurine is handcrafted and they come in a variety of colors and patterns.

Gemstone figurines must be hand carved or sculpted. First the rough gemstone material is cut into a rectangle or cube. Natural gemstone materials vary in hardness and different materials must be handled differently. Softer materials such as soapstone are easiest to carve. The material is then ground down, usually on a fixed wheel grinder or carving grinder. The carver works the wheels, slowly grinding away the unwanted portions of the stone. Most cutting shops that carve animals will actually specialize in just a couple of animals! The animal is rough shaped and then fine ground. Some materials can then be finished in a tumbler. Others must be polished by hand. Ocassionally the material will be left with a matte finish. A diamond saw or v wheel may be used to add fine detail, such as fur. Some small animals can be finished in just an hour or two. Others can take days or even weeks. Exceptionally special or large pieces can actually take months to finish.
