- Skulls Gemstone
Gemstone crystal skulls are believed to exhibit paranormal phenomena by some members of the New Age movement.
The public first became aware of the gemstone crystal skulls during the later part of the 19th century. In 1878 the Musèe de l’homme in Paris and in 1898 the Museum of Man of London each had a clear quartz skull on display. Both were supposedly found in the 1860’s during the French occupation of Mexico, and linked to Mayan sites in this country. Into the early twentieth century more crystal skulls of apparently ancient origin were found in parts of Mexico, Central America and South America. It was believed that some of the skulls were between 5,000 and 36,000 years old. Some of these gemstone crystal skulls have become quite famous. There also is a popular believe that some of these gemstone crystal skulls carvings may have been left here by aliens.
However none of the gemstone crystal skulls made available for scientific study have been authenticated as pre-Columbian in origin. In fact, most of them are believed to be much more modern than originally thought. Some expert studies results show the skulls were made using tools not available to the ancient Aztecs or Mayans.
Despite this, gemstone crystal skulls continue to excite the imagination because they seem so mysterious. The skull itself is a universal symbol for death and mortality. Something that has fascinated people forever. But it is actually believed that in ancient times the skull represented life. Skulls and skeletons are the main symbol of the Mexican holiday, Day of the Dead. The skull and crossbones is a popular symbol for both pirates and poison. Though the original crystall skulls were mostly carved from quartz crystals-either clear, milky white, or colored (such as rose quartz, amethyst, or smoky quartz)-more recently many carvings are done from various colorful semi precious stone materials too.
New Age believers and some metaphysical healers believe that gemstone crystal skulls represent doom and destruction, or hope and healing. Some people believe that crystal skulls can be used like crystal balls to see visions of the past, present and future. They claim that the hand carved stone skulls emit psychic energy, auras or even sounds.
Whether you believe in these powers or not, there is no denying that hand carved gemstone crystal skulls are works of art and take great talent to complete. They are an interesting collector item and great conversation piece!
