Chatoyant Malachite Fibrous Lacey Africa Mineral Specimen

This lacey green Malachite mineral specimen was found in the Katanga Mine in Zaire, Africa.

It is 3.25 inches long, 2 inches at its widest and about 1 inch at its thickest.

Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral. It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system, and most often forms botryoidally, fibrous, or in stalagmite masses.

Chatoyancy is when light is reflected within the mineral. It is an effect usually caused by a fibrous growth.

Malachite was known in Ancient Egypt as early as 3000 B.C. It was used for ornament and in powder form for make up and paint pigment. In the Middle ages, Malachite was worn to protect from black magic and sorcery. In Ancient Greece amulets for children were made of Malachite.
