Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral. It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system, and most often forms botryoidal, fibrous, or stalagmitic masses. Chrysocolla is a copper silicate and is found in the copper oxide zones of major copper deposits. It is usually found with other copper ores, most commonly Malachite.
Malachite was known in Ancient Egypt as early as 3000 B.C. It was used for ornament and in powder form for make up and paint pigment. In the Middle ages, Malachite was worn to protect from black magic and sorcery. In Ancient Greece amulets for children were made of Malachite. Chrysocolla is known as a healing stone among Native American Indian cultures where it was used for strengthening the body's resistance and bringing about calm feelings where there is upset.
