Pyrite is the classic "Fool's Gold". There are other shiny brassy yellow minerals, but pyrite is by far the most common and the most often mistaken for gold. Whether it is the golden look or something else, pyrite is a favorite among rock collectors. It can have a beautiful luster and interesting crystals. It is so common in the earth's crust that it is found in almost every possible environment, hence it has a vast number of forms and varieties. Sphalerite, also known as Blende or Zinc Blende, is the major ore of Zinc. When pure (with little or no Iron) it forms clear crystals, usually red, but as Iron content increases it forms dark, opaque metallic crystals (known as Marmatite).

These pieces were found near the Dallas-Ft. Worth Airport in Texas. This locality is now extinct, as runway expansion destroyed the stream bank, where these were found in a shale layer.

Metaphysical Properties of Pyrite: Pyrite increases vitality and gives one a boost. It enhances willpower, assist in overcoming bad habits, and establishes new patterns of health and positive energy. Sphalerite encourages one to take care of your body. It is an excellent stone for those who are trying to break harmful habits.
