Chrysocolla & Red Cuprite Polished Stone Sphere Sonora Sunset
This lovely mostly red with some blue and black Sonora Sunset sphere is 56 mm or 2.2 inches in diameter.
This is a gorgeous piece of Chrysocolla Cuprite from Mexico!
The red is Cuprite, the blue is Chrysocolla and the black is an Iron Oxide. The mostly red are also called Crimson Cuprite.
It is called Sonora Sunset or sometimes Sonoran Sunrise.
It is from the Milpillas Mine in Sonora, Mexico. The mine opened in 2006. Though most copper mines are open pit mines-this material is covered by 1000 feet of gravel! The mine closed in 2019.
Chrysocolla is known as a healing stone among Native American Indian cultures where it was used for strengthening the body's resistance and bringing about calm feelings where there is upset.
Chrysocolla is named from the Greek chrysos - "gold" and kolla - "glue" in allusion to the name of the material used to solder gold. Cuprite is named from the Latin, cuprum, meaning copper.
