Fossilized Agatized Whale Bone Polished Rock Slab
Petrified Wale Bone slabbed and polished on one face, it is 4 inches by 3.4 inches and 10 mm or almost .5 inch thick.
This genuine fossil semiprecious gemstone is Petrified Whale Bone from California!
This one is highly agatized and took an excellent polish.
It is from an old collection and is labeled on the back, along with the number 2284 (I don't know what that referenced).
The term fossil refers to any preserved remains or imprint of a living organism (usually ancient), such as a bone, shell, footprint, or leaf impression.
Fossilization usually occurred when a whale died and was buried or covered over by a sediment of rock particles. Bones and teeth of the whale must undergo some form of mineralization to become fossils. The organic matter comprising the bones and teeth usually decays and is replaced by minerals such as silica, calcite, carbonates and iron. The cell structure of the bone is usually visible. This shows up in the polished slabs as a honeycomb of holes or polka dots.
