Bloodstone is an interesting dark green jasper with tiny red spots from iron oxide. This attractive chalcedony is also known as Heliotrope, which is derived from Greek meaning sun and to turn, because in ancient times polished stones were described as reflecting the sun.
It mostly comes from India, but has been found in other locations.
Ancient warriors carried Bloodstone believing it would stop bleeding. Even today, finely pulverized bloodstone is used as a medicine and aphrodisiac in India.
Medieval Christians used it to carve scenes of the crucifixion. The legend of the origin of Bloodstone says that it was first formed when some drops of Christ's blood fell and stained some jasper at the foot of the cross.
Metaphysical Properties: Bloodstone is said to keep you from getting discouraged when facing obstacles and it can help dispel feelings of isolation and loneliness.
