Amazonite and Smoky Quartz Natural Crystal Mineral Specimen
Amazonite is a lovely teal green variety of microcline feldspar.
This natural mineral specimen is 2.1 inches by 1.75 inches and 1.8 inches tall.
There are 2 Amazonite crystals surrounded by some broken Smoky Quartz and Quartz, sitting on a bed of Cleavelandite.
This lovely specimen is from the Crystal Peak Mining District area of Teller County, Colorado. This area is well-known for its Amazonite and Smoky Quartz combinations. Much of the digging has been done by rockhounds, but some operations have been done with heavy equipment.
The area, first discovered in the 1870's, is known as the best amazonite hunting ground in the world, though originally the collectors were lookin for topaz and quartz and Amazonite was considered dump material!
Amazonite's blue/green or teal green color is a result of lead and water in the feldspar.
Amazonite is named for the Amazon River in Brazil. However, this stone material is not found in that area and it is assumed it was named for its resemblance to the color of the rain forest.
