Lizard Stone Slab Rough Rock Serpentine California
This unpolished Lizard Sone thick stone slab is 4.8 inches by 2.4 inches and 7 mm thick.
It weighs .22 lbs. and is shown wet in the first 2 pictures.
Named Lizard Stone for its scaly appearance, this serpentine found in California has become increasingly rare.
Serpentine is a magnesium silicate mineral. It ranges in color from pale yellow to forest green and is found in dense masses.
Serpentinite landscapes form California’s emblematic towering coastal cliffs, Sierran talus slopes, and the pastoral rolling hills of Franciscan formation and Franciscan mélange in the Coast Ranges.
In 1965, the California State Legislature and Governor designated “serpentine” as the official State Rock. In 2010, a bill was introduced which would have removed serpentine's special status as state rock due to it potentially containing chrysotile asbestos. The bill met with resistance from some California geologists, who noted that the chrysotile present is not hazardous unless it is mobilized in the air as dust, and it did not pass.
Many of California's unique endemic plants are found nowhere else but on serpentine; over 200 species, subspecies, and varieties of native plants are restricted to some degree to serpentine!
The most common serpentine mineral in Franciscan rocks is antigorite. This mineral gives the serpentinite its characteristic light to dark green color
