Petrified Palm Wood Polished Slab Rock California
This lovely piece of Petrified Palm Wood is slabbed and polished on one face.
It is 5.4 inches long by 3 inches wide and just 4 mm thick.
This is lovely Petrified Palm Wood, or Palmoxylon, from the Calico Mountains of California, and it is from the early to middle Miocene epoch, 19.3 - 13.4 million years ago.
The Calico Mountains of California are a mountain range located in the Mojave Desert. The range spans San Bernardino and Inyo counties in California.
Ancient Palm Wood is not a true wood, as the trunks were composed of parenchyma, a fibrous support material that surrounded hollow tubes of the plant's vascular structure. These tubes transported water, nutrients, wastes, and other materials through the plant. When Petrified Palm Wood fossilized it kept the original characteristics of the Palm Wood and when it is cut perpendicular to the trunk these this vascular structure can be seen as dots.
This piece came from on old collection, collecting in this area is now illegal.
