Product Description
Petrified Wood Polished Stone Slab Cockscomb Utah
This is a gorgeous polished Petrified Wood round that has been sliced and polished on one face, but still rough on the back, and natural "bark" all the way around.
The Petrified Wood stone slab is 4.8 inches and by 3.3 inches wide and about 1/4 to 1/2 thick.
It is Petrified Wood from Utah, in the Cockscomb area of what is now the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Southern Utah.
Erosion of the steeply tilted strata of the East Kaibab Monocline, has formed a long, imposing ridge better known as the “Cockscomb” (sometimes referred to as the Coxcomb) on the western border of the Kaiparowits Plateau at the center of the monument.
You can drive the lengthy unpaved Cottonwood Canyon Road through the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, starting in the south along US 89 near milepost 18, and eventually leading past Kodachrome Basin State Park to Cannonville on UT 12. You will pass through the Cockscomb area. Its sandstone knobs resemble a giant rooster’s colorful comb and the area is referred to as a series of valleys formed by upturned rock layers.
The Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument in Utah was established in 1996. Collecting is illegal in the area. This piece was from an old collection and was self-collected in the 40's or 50's, prior to the establishment of the park.
Petrified Wood formed when a tree died and was quickly buried by sediments. Minerals in the groundwater then permeated the wood, replacing the original organic matter and turning it to stone. The main mineral is silica, but trace elements in the silica create a variety of colors.
