This is a gorgeous highly agatized and slightly translucent polished wood round that has been sliced and polished on one face, natural rough on the back.
The natural Petrified Wood stone slab is 6 inches and by 3.9 inches wide and about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick.
It is not quite a perfect full round as the right side tip is slightly cut off.
This is Petrified Wood from Elko County, Nevada, in an area known as Hubbard Basin.
Petrified Wood is relatively scarce from this region, but it is some of the best agatized wood to be found. This variety of petrified wood is characterized by its white-blue sometimes translucent chalcedony, often enhanced by red, orange, yellows or tan and dark brown patterns.
Most specimens from this location are petrified spruce trees or larger conifers with excellent growth ring preservation.
It is from the Miocene epoch - 6 to 22 million years old.
Petrified Wood formed when a tree died and was quickly buried by sediments. Minerals in the groundwater then permeated the wood, replacing the original organic matter and turning it to stone. The main mineral is silica, but trace elements in the silica create a variety of colors.
