The wood that is found there varies a great deal in quality and preservation (even within the same dig site) but is often very agatized and extremely well preserved showing the finest level of plant detail under magnification.

The colors found in the petrified wood in Sweet Home are mostly wood and earth tones, but a few pieces have blue/gray/black colors.
Petrified Wood formed when a tree died and was quickly buried by sediments. Minerals in the groundwater then permeated the wood, replacing the original organic matter and turning it to stone. The main mineral is silica, but trace elements in the silica create a variety of colors.
