Deschutes Jasper comes from a deposit a near Biggs Junction, Oregon and is named after the area and the nearby Deschutes River.
This semiprecious stone picture jasper deposit is now located in a State Park and will never be mined again. Most of it is now under a highway!
This material was discovered and mined out by Hoot Elkins from the late 60's into the 80's. However it is believed that Native Americans mined this material long before he discovered it, and used it for arrowheads, cutting tools, and scraping tools.
