It is believed Chinese railroad laborers first discovered Wyoming jade in the late 1800s and sent this fine-grained nephrite back to China.
But the Jade from the Granite Mountains area of central Wyoming was not really recognized until 1936. Most of the Jade mining activity occurred in that area between about 1940 and 1960.
The famous Edward's black claim was found in the early 1960s. This area is known for its Black Jade with a red skin, but also produced Black Jade with a white skin. Though there is very little skin on this piece-it does have some white skin on one edge.
Wyoming designated Nephrite Jade as the state gemstone in 1967.
This material is very rare, as it was mined out many decades ago.
There are two types of Jade: Nephrite and Jadeite. The important property of all Jade is its toughness. Toughness in this context is the opposite of brittleness, and is a quite different property to hardness, which is simply resistance of a material to scratching. Diamond is the hardest substance in the world, but Jade is the toughest!
Metaphysical Properties: Nephrite Jade is a stone of the heart. It is said to have a beneficial effect on all heart related issues, and all love relationships. Nephrite Jade is also considered to be good for emotional balance and stability.
