This is a lovely Hampton Butte Jasper unpolished petrified wood rough rock slab that is 9 inches by 7.75 inches wide, and5 mm thick.
It weighs 1 lbs. and is shown wet in the first 12 pictures.
This piece is actually from a limb cast, as the wood decayed before the replacement occurred and so none of the characteristics of the original wood are present.
Hampton Butte is near Brothers, Oregon and the area is known for beautiful petrified wood and limb casts in shades of a unique green, as well as red and orange.
It is found in the Clarno Formation, and from the late Eocene epoch, approximately 34 to 56 million years ago.
Most of the fossilized wood collected in this area of Oregon is identified as Coniferous- Cypress, Sequoia, Laurel, Magnolia, Pine, Sycamore and Quercus (oak).
Petrified Wood formed when a tree died and was quickly buried by sediments. Minerals in the groundwater then permeated the wood, replacing the original organic matter and turning it to stone. The main mineral is silica, but trace elements in the silica create a variety of colors.
It is a 120-acre rockhounding site, located 12 miles northeast of Highway 20 surrounded by BLM and private property.
