This gorgeous extra large Abalone seashell is 8 inches long by 6.5 inches and 2.7inches at its thickest.
Abalone are sea snails in the genus Haliotis, with approximately 70 known species alive today throughout the world, though many are endangered.
Abalone shells are distinctive for their flattened, ear-like shape, nacreous interior, and row of holes used for respiration.
The abalone shell is an extremely strong shell made up of a few whorls (or turns of the gastropod shell). The small dotted holes over the body of the shell are where air was taken in.
Abalones have lovely iridescent interiors in beautiful pearlized white or silver with pink, blue, and greens.
This Abalone seashell is from the Kirkby collection and was collected sometime in the 1930's to the 1960's.
