Moqui Balls Mineral Specimen Shaman Stone Marble Rock
The mineral around the exterior of the ball is actually hematite. The interior of these stones is the same sandstone as the rocks around where they are found. A very thin, microscopic layer of hematite (an iron oxide mineral) coats the sand grains, giving the sand its red color. Weathering and erosion exposes these concretions.
These Moqui Marbles are from southern Utah in the Jurassic age Navajo Sandstone Formation.
They are from an old collection. Most of these concretions are located in State Parks, National Parks and Monuments, and Native American reservations, where collecting is prohibited.
Hopi legend holds that they were playthings for the spirits in the area, left behind to let their currently living relatives know they were happy in the afterlife. The name comes from that legend. Moqui is another word that was an old name for the tribe that is officially designated as Hopi since the early 19oo's.
Some people say the concretions have males or females. The naturally rounder ones are female and the ones with ridges, protrusions, or are flatter disc shapes are male.
Metaphysical Properties of Moqui Marbles: Because it is believed there are male and female versions, it is said that the moqui balls can balance your masculine and feminine energies. Keep them close to your body if you want to be protected, centered, or grounded.
