Lovely Petrified Wood from Boron, California that has been slabbed, and polished on one face.
This is a complete round with "bark" all the way around and it is 3.25 inches by 2.65 inches and about .25 of an inch thick.
This piece is from an old collection and was self-collected from the 1930's-1960's.
Boron Petrified Wood, is a coveted variety of petrified wood collected from the Gem Hill Formation within the Boron Dry Lakes area of the Mojave Valley in California.
It is from the Miocene epoch, 19.3 - 13.4 million years ago.
To find the petrified wood you must dig down 10 to 20 feet by hand, as all the surface material has already been collected.

Some of this petrified wood fluoresces under shortwave UV greens.
Petrified Wood formed when a tree died and was buried by sediments. Minerals in the groundwater then permeated the wood, replacing the original organic matter and turning it to stone. The main mineral is silica, but trace elements in the silica create a variety of colors.
