Product Description
Petrified Wood Unpolished Lapidary Rough Rock
This lovely piece of Petrified Wood is slabbed on one face, natural rough on the back.
The Petrified Wood rough rock piece is 4.26 inches long by 4 inches wide and .4 to 1.4 inches thick.
It weighs .82 lbs. and is shown wet in the first 3 pictures.
Petrified Wood forms when a tree dies and is buried by sediments. Minerals in the groundwater then permeated the wood, replacing the original organic matter and turning it to stone. The main mineral is silica, but trace elements in the silica create a variety of colors.
Of the billions of trees that ever lived, only a fraction were in the right circumstances to fossilize, and only a small fraction of those are solid or have pretty colors or patterns.
This piece was from an old collection and was self collected in the 40's or 50's, unfortunately I do not know the origin-but welcome expert opinions!
