Rio Grande Agate is a beautiful Red Plume Agate from Woodward Ranch in Texas. The iron/manganese minerals present show as black or red plumes resembling trees or ferns.
Agates are abundant in Texas, especially in West and South Texas. Prime locations include the gravels of the Rio Grande and its tributaries, as well as Big Bend, Alpine, and Sierra Blanca.
More than 40 million years ago, a volcano buried the area in lava more than 750 feet deep. Over the centuries, water seeped into pockets formed by gases leaving behind minerals and forming quartz crystals.
Woodward Ranch, south of Alpine, is the only known source of this lovely red plume agate. More than 60 different kinds of agate have been found here, as well as labradorite, quartz, amethyst, fluorescent calcite, and Texas' only precious opal. Woodward Ranch use to offer Pay to Dig, but unfortunately the ranch was sold in 2015 and the public is no longer allowed to collect there.
