Howlite, which is named for its discoverer Henry How (a Nova Scotia geologist), is one of those minerals that is more famous for imitating another mineral. Often the other mineral is turquoise because, though Howlite is always white or gray, it can accept dyes fairly easily and is often dyed sky blue.
This Howlite is from Tick Canyon, California. The mine stopped being worked for borax in the early 1900's and most of the semiprecious gemstone material sold now is waste product from the mine. It was collected off the dumps for many years, but the area has since been closed by housing developments.
Metaphysical Properties of Howlite: Howlite is said to decrease selfishness, stress, pain, and rudeness. It increases tact. And it is believed it heightens creativity!
