Oregon Sunstone Small Tumbled Polished Stone CHIPS Yellow Rock
Sunstone is a microcline or oligoclase feldspar, which, when viewed from certain directions, exhibits a shimmery appearance.
Oregon Sunstones are rare and beautiful gemstones found exclusively in the high desert of Southeastern Oregon. Oregon Sunstones are unique because they are the only sunstones that get their metallic flash from copper. This shimmering optical effect is known as schiller or aventurescence, where light reflects off tiny copper platelets, producing a bright flash when viewed from certain angles.
Sunstones are found in many colors-pink, tan, orange, yellow, green, blue-green, red, and clear as well as multi-colors. The light yellow ones do not have a strong flash, but they are super translucent and very pretty! Sunstones formed in lava from a volcanic explosion approximately thirteen to fourteen million years ago. The lava flow was covered by a vast lake and remained underwater for thousands of years and as the lake gradually dried up, the lava decomposed and revealed loose Sunstones.
Sunstones are found in the state north of Plush, Oregon and in Harney County. Plush is a tiny, unincorporated community in Lake County, not too far north of the California border. Some locations are on private mining claims, collecting without the owner's permission is prohibited. But there is some areas on BLM land in the remote Rabbit Basin of the Steens Mountains where you can still hunt for them.
In 1987, Oregon Sunstones were designated as the official state gemstone.
