Acrostichum petrified wood refers to fossilized, petrified petioles (stalks) of the extinct fern, Acrostichum praelongum. Found primarily in the Eocene 50-million-year-old Green River Formation in Wyoming and Utah, these fossils often feature a distinct V-shaped adaxial groove, preserving the internal anatomy of the giant ferns.
Unlike woody tree fossils, Acrostichum petrified wood preserves the vascular bundles and petioles of large ferns. They are typically found as petiole sections.
This fossilized wood or fern came from mangroves that grew in the early Eocene near Lake Gosiute in Eden Valley in Wyoming.
Eden Valley Petrified Wood, which is found near, and named after, the town of Eden, located in the western central part of Wyoming. The 80-mile-long area includes three major collecting areas: the Blue Forest, Big Sandy Reservoir, and Oregon Buttes.
The Blue Forest collecting areas are located near the west end of Eden Valley and about 30 miles west of Farson. The fossil wood found in this area is well known for the light blue agate that can be associated with many of the specimens.
This petrified wood piece is from the Kirkby collection and was self-collected sometime in the 1930's to the 1960's.
