This amazing piece of Petrified Oak Wood from Swartz Canyon, Oregon, is slabbed and polished on one side.
The Petrified Wood slab is 6 inches long by 3.6 inches wide and .32 of an inch thick.
This petrified wood piece is from the Kirkby collection and was self-collected sometime in the 1930's to the 1970's. It has a stock number glued on and "Swartz Canyon, Oregon" written on the back.
Swartz Canyon is situated in the southeastern part of Oregon, east of Prineville, within the larger region of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.
The petrified wood in Swartz Canyon dates back to the late Miocene epoch, approximately 20 million years ago and comes from the Painted Gorge Basalt Formation.
Swartz Canyon petrified wood is usually a red and chocolate brown color combination and the petrified wood is very highly agatized! Swartz Canyon has produced some of the finest petrified oak woods ever found. Sometimes a black oak wood is found here.
