Sowbelly Amethyst Agate

Sowbelly Amethyst Agate

Sowbelly Amethyst Agate or Vein Amethyst Agate with Silver Dendrites

A lovely material with the unfortunate name of Sowbelly Agate, but it is also known as Vein Amethyst or Amethyst Agate.

Sowbelly is another name for bacon and it is so named because the banding looks a little like purple and white bacon.

Sowbelly Amethyst Agate is actually a gorgeous banded microcrystalline agate, with purple amethyst, and quartz and there are dendritic formations of native silver scattered throughout the chalcedony!

This semiprecious gemstone material is from the Last Chance Mine in Creede, Colorado and was once considered the throw-away material. The mine was discovered in 1891 when a prospector named Theodore Renninger, who was about to give up on mining, went out one last time and told his friends “See y’all later. This is my Last Chance to strike it rich.”

The Last Chance Mine is a closed silver mine that is now open for tours and you can actually see the vein in place of this material!
