Hematite is the primary ore of iron. It is a silvery, shiny opaque black gemstone that almost looks like metal.
Hematite gets its name from the Greek Haimo for "blood", because of the color of its powder (hence the red streak it leaves). It is considered one of the oldest iron oxide minerals and can be found in abundance around the world. In fact, It is possibly the first mineral ever named ending with a "-ite" suffix that is commonly used now.
It was used in seals as early as 2500 B.C. Roman warriors used it as protection during battles, and Native Americans used it to make red face paint. Until recently cosmetic blush contained ground hematite.
