Lovely stand up of beautiful Petrified Wood from Folmsby Ranch near Antelope, Oregon.
This lovely piece from an old collection was found in the 50's or 60's. This type of petrified wood is extremely RARE now!
One face is sliced and polished, the bottom is sliced for a stand and the rest is left natural rough. The polished face is 6.75 inches tall by 5.25 inches wide and it is 2.5 inches at its thickest.
It weighs 3.34 lbs.!
Petrified Wood forms when a tree dies and is quickly buried by sediments, via volcanic activity, flood or mud slide. Minerals in the groundwater then permeated the wood, and over millions of years it permineralized the original organic matter and turned it to stone that retains the characteristic features of the original wood.
The main mineral is silica (or chalcedony), but trace elements in the silica create a variety of colors.
