Petrified Wood Polished Round Last Chance California
This is a gorgeous, polished round of Petrified Wood that is 9.75 inches and by 3.5 inches wide and .35 of an inch thick.
Last Chance Canyon Petrified Wood primarily occurs along Last Chance Canyon in the El Paso Mountains, Kern County, California.
The petrified wood is found in the Dove Spring Formation, part of the Riccardo Group and the age of the petrified wood is Upper Miocene, about 12.8 million years old.
Petrified wood types found in Last Chance Canyon include palm, pine, cypress (Cupressus sp.), locust and live oak.
This Petrified Forest was discovered in 1924 by a couple of gold prospectors. Early on the wood was commercially collected and a popular collecting area for rockhounds.
But the petrified wood is rare now, because the area in the Mojave Desert was closed to collecting. In 1994 the area became a protected State Preserve named Red Rock Canyon State Park which has been the location of many films and commercials, including Jurassic Park.
This piece is from the Kirkby collection.
