This beautiful greenish blue Turquoise is rough tumble polished, but does not have a high gloss finish.
It is 1.28 inches long by 1 inch wide and .87 inch thick.
Turquoise is believed to be one of the first gemstones ever mined, dating back to 6000 B.C. in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.
Turquoise is a hydrated aluminum copper phosphate that often contains iron. Turquoise occurs naturally in shades ranging from sky blue to grey-green, usually in locations where copper is hidden in the soil in high concentrations. The blue color is caused by copper, while the green color is caused by iron or chromium.
Turquoise is found in the southwest of the United States, mostly in Arizona and Nevada, and down into Sonora, Mexico. This piece was from an old collection and was just labeled Nevada.
The name comes from the French word pierre turquois, which means Turkish stone, because the trade route that brought it to Europe used to come via Turkey.
